homeless dog – part 2

lately i’ve been wondering how i’m going to have the cash to buy a plane ticket to fly to oregon to celebrate my 40th birthday.  last night i was actually bitching to a friend about living “paycheck to paycheck.”

12 hours later i’m in line at avenue coffee, wondering if my debit card can handle my non-fat latte and pacing because the barista is taking too long.

tap tap tap. where’s my latte?

hop in the honda.

turn into the car park like an asshole.

….

don’t even notice the homeless guy and his dog pulling stuff from the giant dumpster at the office car park.

grab purse.

grab latte.

see dog out of corner of eye.

see homeless guy reaching into said dumpster.

grab point and shoot camera (curse that my 1400 kit is home…sitting on a comfy chair).

think, “fuck…i can’t believe i was bitching about the price of airfare to portland and this kid is getting nutrition from my tech’s latte that i forced him to toss out after a week.”

oh god…another kid is actually in the dumpster.  he’s digging through our stuff, handing the quality shit out to his friend.

dog chews palm frond.

10 minutes go by.  i’m too scared to approach them.  they’re eating garbage and i’m scared of them.

finally i remind myself.  ”this is what you’re doing.  you wanted to document the bond between a homeless person and a homeless dog.”

….

A year ago, while in ventura county, i decided to do a series on the homeless and their family: their dog.

I chicken out daily, but i think i’m getting there.  here’s the deal…you may be lonely, but you never have “nothing” if you have the love of a dog.

  1. Imagine how much you could save if you made those lattes at home! Wouldn’t take too much to invest in the coffee, the vanilla, the other stuff, yes? Bet you could whip ‘em out faster’n the barista, too! :)

  2. aww. at least the dog/s’ weren’t really homeless. they were owned and that’s enough “home” for dogs.

  3. Thanks for posting this heartfelt note. You know, as I get older (55), my compassion for the noble and dependent beasts grows. God bless.

  4. I get what you are saying. Not too long ago I was complaining about my kitchen cabinet counter tops not matching. I was too the point with it that I was becoming depressed and then I recalled my friend Anna and our conversations about what we can do through kindnesses. I remembered her leaving money for a person who was scrounging for change in a old van for gas. She put a 5 in the window on his seat and left. I complained about a counter top when I knew that some people live out of a shopping cart. It is good to have friends remind you of what matters. Thank you for finding this way to remind us who have just how blessed we are and what we can do with that.

  5. When you get here (and we will have a great birthday celebration!) we should go and volunteer (and you can photograph too) at the Pongo Fund: http://www.thepongofund.org.

  6. There is a homeless man on a bike with two dogs that I see occasionaly over the last 3-4 years. I worry about him all the time. I tried to give him money once he wouldn’t take it. The dogs are getting old, I wonder what will happen when they can’t keep up with him on the bike. I saw the dogs and the bike in the shade a few weeks ago on a very hot day. Broke my heart I couldn’t do something for them.
