dogs with a point and shoot – first tips

well, back on january first i mentioned 2010 would hold a series of tips on how to take better photos of your own dog with your point & shoot.  today we have the first of those tips, courtesy of my willing model, cody bear, taken with a canon powershot a2000.

today’s tip is “fill the frame”, but first of list of some basic tips on taking better photos of your dog with your p & s camera you may have already heard already:

1. don’t use the flash when photographing dogs.  the yellow eye it gives is creepy.

2. get on their level.  bend down and snap head on, not from above.

3. if your camera has a “kids & pets” setting, use that.

more tips in following posts, but today we talk about “filling the frame”.   move closer to your subject.  this will eliminate ugly or distracting backgrounds and make your subject more prominent.  with today’s pocket digital cameras you don’t have to worry as much about the quality of the photo, they make really detailed pictures.

so bend down, move in close and snap.   then….move even closer and snap again.  now i have a bad example for you. (i took it so i’m not slamming anyone.  though how bad can it be?….cody bear is in it? jk!)  here it is:  here.  that picture would have been better without pickles feet in the background and without the ugly agility poles behind his tail.

so grab your camera today, turn off the flash, get low, get close and get snapping!
