dogs in art spotlight – elliott erwitt!

today, our first 2010 “dogs in art spotlight” focuses on elliott erwitt.   he is my favorite dog photographer of all time because he captures the essence of dogs being dogs, presents them in their element and, well, just makes photographs that tell a story of each individual subject.

from perfectly coifed poodles at an nyc groomers to a wild street dog outside a vietnamese shop, elliott erwitt has captured “dogness.”  sleeping, begging, frolicking, pooping.  he has always captured dogs being dogs….on film.  you know who he is:  you’ve seen his chihuahua at the ankles shots!

a great photographer and a great dog photographer, i look through his books when i want to remind myself that dog photography isn’t about “sit…stay.”  it is about ….the dog.  the dog in the moment.

(fyi… his website is here….but this blog has some nice info on e.e., as well)

a couple months ago i posted my attitude towards dog photography here:  click.  his work is one of the many influences.  looking forward to tell you about the others soon!
