i’ve heard from many trainers that nothing quite tires a dog out like playing with other dogs. after a good tussle with another dog, they are tired and satisfied. smiling, panting and wagging.
i love watching dogs play. the fundamentals of dog play are common, but some breeds have a certain style all their own. after getting my border collie, pickles, together with another bc i decided i had to start a bc playgroup because they are so beautiful to watch: they soar over the ground, quickly and gracefully one will lay down to slow things, then they will both pop up and run and spin and pounce.
other dogs are all about wrestling: i’m down, i’m up, you’re down, i’ve got you! others….: the chase.
we’ve seen many dogs in class that are way too full of frustrated energy. we’ve seen that many of these dogs never get the opportunity to play with other dogs, which would help quell some of the nerves.
It’s remarkable that some people don’t understand how dogs play. We were at a winery one time that had several goldens on the grounds and we were watching from a balcony as two of them were having a great wrestling match on the ground … until some well-meaning visitors apparently decided they were fighting and pulled them apart and dragged them away from each other. The dogs were NOT happy about being separated I can tell you!
