here is a boxer at recall class. the trainer has just taken him away to sniff some amazing smells. when she raises her hand, the dog’s owner calls him. once the dog gets to the owner he is rewarded tremendously with tons of tiny and very delicious bites.
the trainers tips for a really good recall:
practice with very high value treats.
while training, never waste the recall command if you know your dog isn’t going to come.
always reward for a successful recall so that when you really need that recall to work, it will.
never punish your dog for coming to you.
grab collar during practice so that if you’re ever using the recall in a real situation, the dog won’t freak out when you grab it’s collar.
practice in a safe area first. once you have mastered the recall there, move training to an area with more distractions.
play hide and seek with your dog.
say the name and command one time, don’t wear it out. use other words or exciting noises to encourage them to come to you.
training should always be fun for the dog.

Nice. I love boxers.

“Grab the collar” : good idea. After reading your tips here, I incorporated that into the “stay/release (come)” practice today. And they each got a nice stinky piece of steer stick immediately after practice (10 minutes each), in accordance with your “high-value treat” tip. Thanks!
Great advice. Incredible photos. Inspiring art.
Keep up the amazing work. I love it!
Have a dog gone great weekend.
